This is an idea which I've unashamedly stolen from PC Pro magazine whose A-List is the first place that I look for recommendations before buying new hardware or software, and has been for years.
Hardware
- Desktops and laptops : Dell : I know that Dell is not a very sexy hardware supplier but I've bought a lot of equipment from them over the years and it's all, as far as I am aware, still going strong, including an early Inspiron laptop which just refuses to die despite years of abuse. To update the old saying "No one was ever sacked for buying Dell."
- Printers : Canon/HP : I've had basic home/home office printers from both and they've just gone on-and-on. The current Canon Pixma MP610 all-in-one is as good as the PC Pro Review says it is.
Software - free (downloadable)
I'm ashamed to admit that I've only just (Summer 2010) discovered the Gizmo's Freeware Reviews website which does exactly what its name suggests. This has confirmed some of my previous selections, and provided a couple of new A-List candidates, as below.
